Mum and baby

Co-occupation between a mother and baby plays a crucial role in strengthening attachment, promoting developmental milestones, and supporting maternal well-being. Here are evidence-based interventions designed to foster sensory, motor, emotional, and cognitive development while enhancing the mother's sense of competence and connection.

1. Sensory & Emotional Regulation-Based Co-Occupations

Goal: Enhance emotional bonding and sensory processing through shared experiences.

Interventions:

🔹 Skin-to-Skin Contact (Kangaroo Care)

  • Benefits: Regulates baby's heart rate, reduces stress, promotes attachment.

  • How: Place the baby on mother/fathers chest after birth or during quiet moments.

🔹 Infant Massage

  • Benefits: Improves digestion, enhances body awareness, supports maternal relaxation.

  • How: Teach the mother/father gentle stroking and massaging techniques for the baby's arms, legs, and back.

🔹 Rhythmic Movement (Rocking, Swaying, Dancing Together)

  • Benefits: Helps with sensory integration, soothes both mother and baby.

  • How: Try putting baby in a wrap or carrier whilst gently swaying to music.

🔹 Co-Regulated Breathing Exercises

  • Benefits: Supports emotional attunement and self-regulation.

  • How: Practice slow, deep breathing while holding the baby close, matching their rhythms.

2. Motor Development & Physical Play Co-Occupations

Goal: Support gross and fine motor skill development while engaging the mother in playful, meaningful interactions.

Interventions:

🔹 Tummy Time with Mum’s Participation

  • Benefits: Strengthens neck and core muscles, improves visual tracking.

  • How: Lie on your back and place the baby on your chest for face-to-face engagement.

🔹 Baby Yoga & Stretching

  • Benefits: Encourages body awareness, improves flexibility.

  • How: Simple movements like bringing the baby’s knees to the tummy or gently moving their arms in circular motions.

🔹 Water Play (Bath Time Rituals)

  • Benefits: Provides proprioceptive input, strengthens muscles, builds trust.

  • How: Encourage playful splashing, floating toys, or gentle pouring of warm water over the baby’s hands.

🔹 Mirror Play & Facial Mimicry

  • Benefits: Enhances social skills and emotional expression.

  • How: Mother and baby can make funny faces in a mirror, copy each other's expressions.

3. Cognitive & Language Development Co-Occupations

Goal: Promote early communication, auditory processing, and problem-solving skills.

Interventions:

🔹 Singing & Nursery Rhymes with Movement

  • Benefits: Enhances language acquisition, rhythmic awareness.

  • How: Sing lullabies while gently bouncing or swaying.

🔹 Reading Together with Expressive Voices

  • Benefits: Boosts vocabulary, strengthens auditory processing.

  • How: Use books with high contrast images and rhythmic patterns to engage attention.

🔹 Peek-a-Boo & Object Hiding Games

  • Benefits: Supports cognitive development, teaches object permanence.

  • How: Use a scarf or hands to cover the baby’s face, then reveal with excitement.

🔹 Conversational Turn-Taking

  • Benefits: Encourages speech and bonding.

  • How: Pause after cooing or talking, allowing the baby time to respond with babbling.

4. Mealtime & Feeding-Based Co-Occupations

Goal: Create a positive feeding experience that supports both nutritional needs and emotional connection.

Interventions:

🔹 Responsive Feeding (Breastfeeding or Bottle-Feeding with Eye Contact & Skin Contact)

  • Benefits: Enhances bonding, supports hunger cue recognition.

  • How: Hold the baby close, make eye contact, and respond to subtle hunger cues.

🔹 Messy Play with Early Solids (For Older Babies - 6+ Months)

  • Benefits: Reduces food aversion, enhances tactile exploration.

  • How: Encourage playful touching, smearing, and exploring different food textures.

🔹 Baby-Led Weaning with Shared Mealtime

  • Benefits: Supports independence, enhances mealtime bonding.

  • How: Offer safe finger foods while eating alongside the baby to model enjoyment.

5. Maternal Well-Being & Self-Care Co-Occupations

Goal: Ensure that co-occupations also support the mother's mental health and well-being.

Interventions:

🔹 Mindful Walking with Baby in Carrier or Stroller

  • Benefits: Supports physical movement, reduces postpartum stress.

  • How: Take slow, mindful walks, focusing on nature or breathing patterns.
